From the heart…

James 4:1 “What causes quarrels and what cause fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?

Everyone has heard this statement before, “I’m just joking with ya” and it seems to make things OK.  But during those times that you or whoever else says that to someone, it usually doesn’t come across your mind to think about how that person is taking the statement.  I would say, and for the most part I believe it to be true, there is always a little truth from the heart in every joking or kidding-around statement.  And usually the person that is receiving the statement will take the little bit of truth part and run with it, having bad feelings or feelings of something that came up from that statement.  Close friends are able to joke around with each other more, just for that fact that they know each other and how each other will take the statements that they throw out at each other.  In this setting and only this setting, I believe it would be OK to give some humor to the people around you.  Lets all take a look at what we say, even if we add the ‘I’m just joking with ya’ statement right afterwards.  It could be used to put someone else down and God does not call us to do that. “Let not corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

“As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.” Proverbs 27:19– I would also add with this verse, ‘so the heart of man reflects the man’ and the words that come out of his mouth.

“The Spiritual quality of our words emanates from our hearts.” Temper Longman III (War of Words, Paul Tripp)
