A watchman for Israel

A friend and I were talking the other day about the lost and how we are supposed to keep a careful watch on what we do, how we think towards the lost and if we are trying to do it in our strength or the Lord’s.  We were talking about friends and those that don’t know Him, and I said that I was afraid that they would come to know the Lord and be with Him forever.  She used the example from Ezekiel 3:18-21 about not telling those and warning them of the upcoming disaster that awaits them.

“18 If I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul. 20 Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul.” Ezekiel 3:18-21

I do believe that we need to share the gospel with everyone we know, but not because of being scared into it, thinking that if we don’t everything will be on our shoulders.  We should share with everyone because it is the affect of an overflow of Christ’s love in us and the willingness to be sent out to tell everyone, even those that are closest to us.  What I don’t believe, is that there are prophets in today’s world, where there were prophets back in the Old Testament times.  I am not saying that there might not be people who have the gift of Prophecy, but it would not be in the same context as the prophets in Old Testament times.  God spoke to them and used them to speak for Him, where today we have Jesus Christ and God speaks through Him to talk to us, as well as, using the Holy Spirit to help us proclaim Jesus and what Jesus said.  We are called to tell those about Christ, which is different from the prophets having to tell people exactly what God, Himself, said towards their lives and what they should do.

Ezekiel 3:16-17 “16 And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.” In verse 15, it says that Ezekiel came to the people that God had told him to go to, and became overwhelmed at the sin that he saw there and sat there for seven days.  God had told him exactly what to do, and Ezekiel wasn’t really doing it. I assume that he was probably thinking that this couldn’t work at all with what he had to say and where those people were in their sin. God gave him stern warning that he was the only one that could speak to them, because God had elected him as the watchman of Israel and those people were still apart of Israel.  I have tried to talk to my friends about Christ and Him crucified, but they usually don’t want to listen and change to subject.  My fear is that they are not called by God to be a child of Him, not that I haven’t done enough or nothing at all, but that God hasn’t chosen them or elected them into His kingdom.  I know I can’t decided for God who He should give grace and allow into His kingdom and I know He has totally control over all life, it just hurts to know that people that I love might and probably will not be in Heaven when they die.

We all need to continue to spread the great message of Jesus and what His death on the cross means for all of us, but maybe look to the New Testament for verses to spur you on to share with others.  Passages like Hebrews 3:12-13 and 2 Timothy 4:1-5 would be good to look at.
