The Cross (Good Friday)

Today is a solemn day, but a joyous one because of Jesus Christ dying on the cross for the sins of the world.  The sins of everyone that has lived on this earth and will live before Christ comes back on that glorious day, He took it all so we could be able to live with Him in Heaven someday.    These are Jesus’ words and a description of the night before:

Matthew 26:39 “‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.'”

Mark 14:36 “‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.'”

Luke 22:44 “And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly; and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

And Jesus on the cross:

Matthew 27:46 “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, Lema sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

There was a time when I was younger, (and I’m sure others’ have as well), I used to think that when Christ prayed and sweated blood in Gethsemane, he was not wanting to go through the torture that was going to happen on the cross. And when Christ was on the cross it came to a point where it was too much to bear.  That was my perception because Christ was human, God becoming man, and having to go through all of the suffering; I know I could not have handled it and I’m sure no one else really could.

I’ve grown to understand, and heard it again a few weeks back, that it was way more than just the physical pain.  God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have all been together, so when Jesus came to the point of the cross and His crucifixion, he knew what was going to happen that had never happened before.  Because of God’s love for us, He sent His Son down to die for our sins, being blameless and without sin, was able to take on all the sins of the world.  But because God hates sin soo much, He could not be able to bear to see His Son with the sins of the world on His shoulders.  God is perfect and he can not bear to be near to sin, so when Christ was put on the cross, God had to turn His back on His one and only Son.  Jesus loved us soo much that he gave up His connection with the Father to give us a chance to live with Him forever in Heaven.  He did a work that I couldn’t have done myself, and no one else could, because He loves me (and you) with everything.

Let us remember what He has done for our lives. Let us take the time to be still and wait on His love. Let us stop what we are doing and praise Him who took on what we could never have accomplished by ourselves. Let us remember HIM!

(the link is a sermon, about an hour in length, and the part on this starts around the 46th minute. I would recommend listening to all of it, if you have the time)

The Gospel in Christmas

Posted in following Jesus, God, Holiday with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 29, 2010 by rylanreed

Jesus Christ, the gospel, has given us a chance to live with Him in eternity, if we just take a step of faith and believe that He is God and came to save us from our sins.  We think of Jesus as a baby boy, and that is what He came to earth as, but His main purpose was living a life for us to follow (knowing that we aren’t perfect and don’t have to be) and dying on the cross to take the punishment of our sins on His shoulders so that we could have a close relationship with Him and God the Father.

Here is a Christmas card that spells the gospel out in a beautiful way.

If you would like to read the first part in this two part series, you can go here.

Here are the lyrics from Tedashii‘s new album Identity Crisis,  song entitled Make War:

[Intro:] ~John Piper~

I hear so many Christians, murmuring about their imperfections, and their failures, and their addiction, and their shortcomings. And I see so little war!…  Murmur, murmur, murmur. Why am I this way?…  Make War!

[Verse 1:] ~Tedashii~

Bang with me/ba-bang bang, ba-bang with me/ No more playing games man/cause this thing can get risky/So man if you in Christ/TAKE UP!!/your cross quickly/Stand fearless on the front line/time to come with it/Do the right thing/WAKE UP!!/and lets get it/I ain’t even in the ring/they throwing bows like Riddick/Persistently attacking me/they’re even in the back of me/It’s either fight or loose my life and I can’t take this passively/So what you think I’m bout to do/I’m bout to do what I can do/Trust the ONE who got me through/and fight like it was after school/Never giving up/steady, standing on the battle field/Feet firm to the ground like I stepped on Chappel Hill/Flesh feeling frisky, sin persuades and tempts me/Satan cheers me on/guilt followed by conviction/It’s the same ol’ trap/and we fall like we defenseless/Work your senses/grow in wisdom/stand firm and be relentless/

Hook:

I MAKE WAR!/Cause sin never sleeps/It’s got me in a trance/you can see it in my dreams/I MAKE WAR!/Man I beat my flesh/To the death/every breath/like I beat my chest/I MAKE WAR/sun up/I MAKE WAR/sun down/I MAKE WAR/time in/I MAKE WAR/time out/I MAKE WAR/against lust/I MAKE WAR/Against pride/I MAKE WAR/ Against me/I MAKE WAR/Until I die/

[Verse 2:] ft. ~Flame~

Do you even have a clue/What happened to you when He died/When that tomb got rolled/ when He rose in the sky/I think we emphasis sin so much/That it makes us paralyzed/And glorify struggle so much/That it makes us terrified/And de-emphasize the fact that we have been sterilized from our own lives and thus/We gotta snap out of it/We ain’t in no straight-jacket/We free/When Jesus died in our lives something strange happened/He gave us power/Yeah I know that we sinners but since He rose He’s renewing the image of God in us/Now, we gotta start making war/Now we can start saying no/To them fleshy impulses that Jesus Christ is paying for/Now we can start taking the lead/Just like the Dalai Lama and start going all out like a suicide bomber/Whatever the sin is we gotta go go go harder/By His grace no time to waste and just just just like there’s no tomorrow/

[Hook:]

[Verse 3:] ~Tedashii~

I’m a Christ representer, fit to stand and deliver/Cause a lot of my believers struggle with their agenda/So I dropped this on an ADAT/just so you could come play back/A hit to be encouraged that rocks you with truth from, way back/So listen up to it ASAP/like you do a Lecrae track/I’m spittin’ written visions to put on heads like a wave cap/Sinning, nawl we don’t play that/cause that’s the way that as slave act/I’m filled with the Spirit so tell them dog this is pay back/As you begin to copy the carbon copies of Christ/And conform to His written image you should be shinning a light/If you not, why is that?/Is it fear that’s been grippin’ you/cause you scared they’ll be dissin’ you/Flipping birds while that spit at you/If you not, why is that?/it don’t matter so bump it/perfect love cast out fear and He ain’t save us for nothing/his is a privilege (privilege)/your life to give to Him (give to Him)/so stand firm for Him dawg and lets get it in/

[Hook:]

Fightin sin pt. 1

“Let not one of them escape.”   1Kings 18:40

When the prophet Elijah had received the answer to his prayer, and the fire from heaven had consumed the sacrifice in the presence of all the people, he called upon the assembled Israelites to take the priests of Baal, and sternly cried, “Let not one of them escape.” He took them all down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. So must it be with our sins—they are all doomed, not one must be preserved. Our darling sin must die. Spare it not for its much crying. Strike, though it be as dear as an Isaac. Strike, for God struck at sin when it was laid upon his own Son. With stern unflinching purpose must you condemn to death that sin which was once the idol of your heart. Do you ask how you are to accomplish this? Jesus will be your power. You have grace to overcome sin given you in the covenant of grace; you have strength to win the victory in the crusade against inward lusts, because Christ Jesus has promised to be with you even unto the end. If you would triumph over darkness, set yourself in the presence of the Sun of Righteousness. There is no place so well adapted for the discovery of sin, and recovery from its power and guilt, as the immediate presence of God. Job never knew how to get rid of sin half so well as he did when his eye of faith rested upon God, and then he abhorred himself, and repented in dust and ashes. The fine gold of the Christian is oft becoming dim. We need the sacred fire to consume the dross. Let us fly to our God, he is a consuming fire; he will not consume our spirit, but our sins. Let the goodness of God excite us to a sacred jealousy, and to a holy revenge against those iniquities which are hateful in his sight. Go forth to battle with Amalek, in his strength, and utterly destroy the accursed crew: let not one of them escape.  (Evening, C.H. Spurgeon July 17)

Oh, how I hate sin only after the fact of me doing it, which is usually more of a convicting feeling rather than one of remorse and wanting to fight the sin right from the start.  Why can’t I hate sin before the fact of it happening, when I totally know what the outcome will be and how I will be feeling about the sin in my life.  Only through God’s grace, mercy, strength, and power will I be able to beat the sin that is so prevalent in my life.  If I ask of Him and hide under His mighty wings, can I be able to start living a holy life devoted to Him.  I am still a sinner and will always sin til I die, but hopefully as I grow older the sins will start to decrease in their consistency and power.

Keep striving to fight sin in and through the power of Jesus Christ.  When we seek and savor Jesus for who He is and what He has done for our lives, helps us better want to live our lives for Him and not to satisfy our self-wants and desires.  Strive for Him to be glorified and you will be fighting sin along the way.

Burdened

This world a lot of times is a burden, because of the sin that has so clung to every aspect of life as we know it.  What burdens you? It could be the situation that you are in right at this moment, it could be the situations that your family are in, it could be the situations that your friends are in, or it could even encompass the world and the different horrible situations that are going about on a day to day basis.

In the first chapter of Nehemiah, He is heart-broken and has a burden for the city of Jerusalem and their walls, not just because of that fact, but because of the people in the city and their protection.

4″As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5And I said, ‘O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenants and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you.  Even I and my father’s house have sinned. 7We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you have commanded your servant Moses. 8Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, 9but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your dispersed be under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 10They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 11O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”   Nehemiah 1:4-11a

A few days ago, I was walking back from my time on campus, praying as I went.  Up to that point there had been a lot of things happening, most bad, and it was really burdening my heart.  As I prayed, I started to cry and prayed not specifically that things would get better in peoples lives, even though I did pray for that, but mostly for their hearts and their relationships with God.  There have been a few deaths, a few big marriage problems, a few sicknesses, and a few situations where priorities are put ahead of God.  I know that God is totally in control of all of these things and His heart breaks as well, but there is a purpose to all of it and God will make everything good in the end, even though we might not be able to see it for a long time.

Let us use this prayer for our own lives and for those that are close to us as well as the people of this world.  This speaks true for all of us, so lets go to God and trust in His almighty hands.

so unworthy

There are just some points in my life where I see my wrong and the sin within, maybe by comparing what I do to someone else, and wonder how I could deserve such grace.  How many times have I walked away from Him, or been a hypocrite, pretending that I was a Christian but living the way that I wanted to live in my dark little hole.  I’ve seen so many other people that look and do so many good things, and have wondered why me and not them, but that is how grace works.  See, its really not the fact of what I have done to be deserving of any of what God has given me, but its hopefully the praise and adoration that will come from a heart that knows without Christ it is worth nothing and having God get all of the praise and glory.  And for those that look good and do great things, they pretty much have believed in themselves and will believe in themselves until something big changes their lives, or they meet the Creator face to face on that Judgment day.  I am humbled each and everyday for what God has done in my life and the chance for me to be in Heaven with Him when I die.

Here is an excerpt from a friend, and I think he explains it well enough for everyone to understand where we stand with Christ:

Every now and then I realize anew how unworthy I am of everything that God does for me every day; the way He loves me absolutely unconditionally. That’s when I break. When this happens, it is usually the highlight of my week. Is this strange to you? What does the Bible say on this?

Read Luke 7:36-48. (own commentary) The woman, a “known sinner” cries, washes His feet with her tears, dries it with her hair and anoints His feet at huge expense while the watching pharisee judges. Jesus’ response?  v47 “But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

Jesus tells us that the most important important thing we can do is to love God(Mat 22:37). If we’re honest with ourselves about where we are(and as Paul points out in Rom 3, we’re all in a bad place), we will love Him more.

CS Lewis puts it this way: “Knowledge of broken law precedes all other religious experience.” Not to condemning us, but making us realize our constant need for our Savior!

Jesus speaks about Himself in Luke 20:17-18: The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone. Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.

Personally, I choose being broken.      André Baladi

Only God

Everyone has an empty space in them, even if we don’t want to admit it.  There is something inside of us, that if we don’t fill it with something, anything, it will drive us to insanity.  That is why most people usually have something that controls their life.  It could be anything, and if it is not God, then its a sin.  Some people have sports as their God or ‘filler’, others have money and possessions.  Some even have food as their idol.  It can be called all of these different ways, but they are all the same, its a sin.  Only God, the True God and Jesus Christ, can fill the gap that is inside of us.

“None but God can satisfy the longings of an immortal soul; that as the heart was made for Him, so He only can fill it.” — Richard Chenevix Trench
